From Japan’s cutting-edge STUDIO4°C (Tekkonkinkreet, MFKZ) and director Ayumu Watanabe, this stunningly beautiful adaptation of the prize-winning manga features a score from legendary composer Joe Hisaishi (Spirited Away). When Ruka was younger, she saw a ghost in the water at the aquarium where her dad worked. Now she feels drawn toward the aquarium and the two mysterious boys she meets there, Umi and Sora, who were raised by dugongs and hear the same strange calls from the sea as she does. As the kids get caught up in the mystery behind the sudden worldwide disappearance of the ocean’s fish, they uncover cosmic connections that will change them forever.

The animation is fantastic, and it’s beautifully made. I wouldn’t say it’s the best of the best, but It has Mix emotion, mix scenery, mix of everything. The purpose of this film was supposedly is about “life”. What’s goes beyond that.

Absolutely stunning animation with a powerful musical score. The movie; however, never grounds itself with adequate character development. I do enjoy a storyline that keeps the viewer wondering what is coming, but the answers here are vague philosophical and metaphysical ponderings of how "space looks just like the ocean" and "we are all made of the same things". The two prime children of the sea" are never explored in any detail-and with no backstory, we don't really care about them. The lead girl is similar- her relationship with her parents is distant and never really changes till the end, but again we barely care about the family as little was done to develop them. There is an emphasis on a "gathering at sea", where every sea creature in the world is headed to one point in the ocean. It is never really clear what happens here. Nevertheless, once again the animation is spectacular, and as a piece of art this film is well worth your time.

The story line is a bit messy but the overall philosphy is understandable. Regardless, the artistic value of this piece truly makes up for the story line and it is not the worst anime story line out there. There is another similar anime movie that came out recently with a similar concept but its more focused on the weather and rain. You probably know which movie I'm talking about if you follow anime movies but I actaully did not like that move at all even though some would say that it has a better story line. I loved the story line in this movie so much more so I give it five stars.
