From Damien Chazelle, BABYLON is an original epic set in 1920s Los Angeles led by Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Diego Calva, with an ensemble cast including Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li and Jean Smart. A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.

Even though Babylon brought me to some uncomfortable places, I thoroughly enjoyed this film. lt’s definitely not a movie for everyone though—take caution

This movie is long and bad. Please play with your kids, paint a self portrait, or do something else meaningful for you because this movie is a 3 hr plus waste of time. Please don’t let the sacrifice of my time be in vain. Heed my warning about the loss of my precious time on this blue marble. I implore you to spend three hours doing something enjoyable because this film isn’t.

I had high hopes because I love the subject matter. But once the elephant defecates on a man with 5 minutes followed by a graphic golden shower, I knew this movie was trash.
The only scene worth watching is the studio first using sound recording. That’s brilliant. Everything else was disgusting and unnecessary.
Babylon 👍

Babylon is different. A series of memorable, well acted scenes present different eras of early Hollywood that is summarized in a powerful scene with Jean Smart and Brad Pitt. What a scene and great writing! The entire cast has large dramatic range of emotions, especially Margot Robbie who is kind of a Harley Quinn meets a desperate Hollywood starlet. These scenes climax to a collage of iconic Hollywood history that was reminiscent of “Day of the Locust”. The movie doesn’t end, it explodes. I was captivated throughout.

Good and awesome set design but it collapses under its own excesses

This is worst film I have seen in years. It had so much promise and talent. It just just ends being an overlong pile of refuse. Such a dissapointment.

Watching this film, it is hard to fathom what they were thinking. Had to stop halfway as ran out of patience. Other reviews here have been too kind.
How can this be the same director as LaLaLand?

This was a great movie. Reminds me why I love to watch movies again. The last few years we have gotten nothing but garbage from the movie industry, and I was given up hope and then seen this. I personally loved it. A bit long, 3 hour but worth it.

Let me say first I am a fan of Damien Chazelle and I went into this with high expectations and of course hoped it would be great. And it wasn't. Despite the scale and spectacle, and a couple of great set pieces, the movie was confusing and tonally all over the map. At times, it kind of felt like Chazelle was himself making sport of what he was creating and it didn't really work for me. Some key moments are also telegraphed so obviously that it takes away from them. I did like the performances overall, especially Diego Calva. But the gross-out stuff finally kind of killed it for me. And Monty Python did it better. And I gave this three stars but would take away half of one if I could.

Enough of Brad Pitt already. For crying out loud. He’s not even a good actor.

This could've been a great film. They rely too much on unhinged debauchery when lacking in substance. They missed the mark on depicting the soul of old Hollywood. It was completely infiltrated by modern perspective, and soulless sexuality and violence.
Is this a new trend for Hollywood? If so, I'm tuning out. I'm not interested in riding the entertainment de-evolutionarily train and its efforts to use shock and star power in replacement of substantiative, writing, directing, acting, and production.
‼️A special note regarding the hyper-violence and masochism: This is a dealbreaker. You've gone WAY too far slipping this in and producing such foul debauchery! You're extremely off the mark and you have lost an audience!! We will now go out of our way to stay away from films with these stars, directors, and producers who have been involved in this and sold out to debauchery in lieu of talent.

Hollywood seems to be going through a “homage” phase, making movies about old Hollywood. I enjoyed the look into the silent movie era; that part was interesting—great music and acting. By the end, I think the writers and director didn’t know how to finish the movie. In many ways, the film seems like one big advertisement for Hollywood. But by the end, I wasn’t sure what the takeaway was. The overarching theme seemed to be that people in Hollywood end up miserable. All this to say, the first half was good, and that’s about it. These homage films aren’t that great, like Hail Caesar or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, etc. They’re long, drawn-out movies about why Hollywood is great. But there’s no story and no compelling reason to care once the movie ends.

After seeing it 2x, I find it an entertaining movie. I don’t think it’s a masterpiece nor a flop. But despite some flaws, it was a very enjoyable film for me. I’m not a film critic, but I think it’s worth a watch. (I usually watch syfy & horror, so this was a nice change of pace for me).

I can’t remember the last time we haven’t finished a movie but we couldn’t make it past about 10 min in. This movie seemed like a great gatsby type film but first 10 min (all we could watch) were full of graphic fetish/sex scenes and just crass humor. Really disappointed.

Gatsby movie wanna be but worse. Looks like some friends nominate this AWFUL tv movie for dummies, obviously new generation of hollow heads. Not a real acting nor real interesting not worthy at all. Save yourself time and money and look for old Hollywood movies with famous actors.

Damien Chazelle has delivered a film that's both a "love and hate letter" to cinema and its early history of how the industry shifted from silents to talkies, against extermely uncomfortable and hard-to-watch debauchery. However, many have said it could be re-evaluated in the future as a misunderstood masterpiece, so we'll see where it goes from here. On the positive side, Justin Hurwitz raises the roof with his score. Prepare for "Voodoo Mama" to be played a lot as a hot dance party track.

Amazing movie. Only felt the length at the very end but the last scene is worth it. And one of the best scores in a long time.

This movie is not only about the 1920’s era of silent films and the transition to speakeasies but also takes us into the real mind of Damien Chazelle, if you liked La la land/whiplash and don’t like this movie then you’re simply not a fan of Damien.

I saw this because I enjoyed Whiplash so what could go wrong? Turns out that BAB is a BORE, a dull juvenile romp for LA-Hollywood insiders only. Zero character development and cliché storylines. A better film celebrating cinema 🎦 is Sam Mendes Empire of Light 💡. It’s the glorious cure to this bloated DOA snooze fest. Do better Hollywood. More Empire of Light 💡 please!!!

Critics have never been as out of touch than now. This is moviemaking at its best, breathtaking cinematography, fantastic direction and editing, great original music and great acting. I do think that the second half is not as solid as the first half, but then again I enjoyed it more on my second viewing which means that it will continue to age well. Superb.

I just have a couple things to say about this masterpiece of a film. This film is better then Avatar 2. I rather spend 3 hrs watching Babylon then Avatar. Don’t get me wrong Avatar 2 is a good movie just not a personal favorite. Just because this movie is 3 hrs long doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie. From start to finish I enjoyed it. This movie didn’t feel like a slow movie like avatar my. Everyone in the cast did a incredible job. The only thing that really bothered me was that Tobey Maguire needed more screen time and more advertisement in the film because all I can hear when he appeared was “look it’s Spider-Man!” Like yeah we know we saw the trailer. That’s really my only complaint about the film. I would really love a sequel on how Hollywood made it from back and white to how it is now. Just a suggestion.

The only word u can describe this movie is epic. Not only is it epic but it is an epic itself. The masterful directing, quick pacing that makes 3 hours fly by, jaw dropping performances, and hypnotic cinematography is only half of why this movie is amazing. The message behind the entire film is really well delivered and if you really truly love cinema as an art form, Babylon will become your next bible.

Like some of the other reviews say, it didn’t feel like 3 hours and i was disappointed when it was over because it was so good. Just felt like a party and was very well done. I can’t wait to buy it and watch it again.

The critics are nuts. Yes it’s a bit long, but it’s exhilarating and fabulously entertaining. Best of all, it’s an original movie and isn’t yet another superhero movie where a bunch of cartoon characters beat up New York City for the hundredth time.

Wished I cared more for the characters. Margot Robbie steals the movie. But I still didn’t care for her. Too bad. Too long of a movie. They should have cut out 30-45 minutes. Easily. The look of the movie is nice. Lighting/costumes.

The only thing I regretted more than this movie was not walking out before the end. The acting was great, but the story was unfortunate and pointless. It felt like an opportunity to share a moment in Hollywood history that in no way should be glorified like this.
