For high-powered Chicago attorney Martin Vail (Richard Gere), guilty or innocent are not degrees to decide. His job is to defend—especially when a case might put his name in the headlines and further his career. When Vail hears that a penniless altar boy (Edward Norton) is accused of murdering the local archbishop, he snaps up the case, eager for the media spotlight. Little does he know that it will uncover a viper's nest of corruption, pit him against a prosecutor (Laura Linney) who's his ex-lover, and test all his skill, judgement and even his win-at-any-cost attitude.
I wonder how many gerbils were killed on set?
Superb performances by Richard Gere and Edward Norton!!!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Very good movie - scary and with a violent subject, but Norton gives it his all and Gere does a pretty good job as well.

I’d forgotten how excellent this movie was. I’d not seen it in over a decade. It’s all you look 👀 for in a great crime/ trial movie 🎥. IMHO, this is Richard Geres best acting in any film. Including the 1 he’s most known for- Pretty Woman. I’m not a fan of his acting but this movie he’s great 👍. Well worth the 99 cents and it’s not on Netflix
I Watch this with my son in-law who was a baby when this movie came out.. And I have to say, it's even better after all these years and kept me guessing to the very end.. again.. Ironically the movie had the luckiest out come for the villain because everyone around him was to busy playing the political game.. This movie Just proves that egotistical/political people can make life so complicated for good people and so much easier for people who don't deserve to be lucky... ironically you see this type of good and bad luck scenario happen to people more and more these days,, and if I'm being honest this movie taught me a lot about how pride can end your happiness..
I don't like so much thrillers normally but this movie is one of the best in this genre. And I think it has even a meaning for real life and teaches a lesson but hush…I don't want to give it away!
One of the best around. All the performances are great. Never a dull moment.
So anyone else have the slight issue of the trailer being in japanese?

and go with him in this, as the bad guy you never ever EVER want to encounter in real life. HOLY CRAP! GREAT performance and gripping, thrilling movie!
I had a couple of hours free this weekend and downloaded Primal Fear. Great plot, great acting and plenty of twists. If you are looking for a great film, this is it!
This movie is the best one that i have ever seen
I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Buy this movie if you know what's good for you, Edward Norton is my all-time favorite actor and his performance is just amazing, also considering this was his first roll. Richard Gere is calm, cool, and collected [when isn't he?] and he plays Martin Vail so well. Laura Linney is at her best here she plays the cold hearted prosocuter so well! BUY THIS MOVIE!
This movie is watchable. I liked it. So much so that I even read the book. But, to be honest, Edward Norton is the Tom Brady of this movie. The star. He carried the success on his shoulders. This film would not work at all without his breathtaking breakthrough performance as Aaron (or Roy). It really foreshadows the kind of characters he played as his carrer progressed. Without Mr. Norton, this film would sink into nothingness. This movie gets three stars out of five. Norton's perfomance, however, is off the charts.
An interesting plot and great cast makes this one of my favorite movies. Richard Gere esentially plays himself, but Edward Norton's performance is inspired. I watched it over and over again!
you have to buy this movie, this movie is awesome! the acting was just outstanding, edward norton was great in this movie! buy this movie because this is totally worth 9.99 click yes please!
richard gere and norton at their best... must watch for all movie goers !!!
This is a great thriller and Edward Norton really steals the show. Ironically, not the first time that Ed has played a mentally handicapped person... see also The Score starring Robert Deniro.
While I'm NOT a fan of Richard Gere, this is one movie I would watch over and over again. Edward Norton is AMAZING in his acting debut. He plays his character like a real pro. I've seen most of his movies, and this is probably his best. Laura Linney is also very good playing the prosecutor.
Not a very original scenario but there was some good elements in the movie... too bad the cheap twist at the end (a common trick in Hollywood type movies) made it a 2-star movie for me instead of a 3-star. OK to watch, but definitely not a movie to buy. (the acting was OK though)
This is an excellent film, featuring the phenomenal Edward Norton's amazing film debut. By the way, the very good black actor in this film is NOT Clarence Williams III, who was in "The Mod Squad" in the 1970s but Andre Braugher.
This is definitely one of the best movies ever! Ed Norton is fantastic! Wonderful ending@!
great movie edward norton and richard gere were amazing this movie has twist after twist and an incredible ending great suspense/thriller movie
I attended this film in theatre with hesitation--Richard Gere in a "Thriller/Suspense"? I was blown away by the plot and the drama. Yet, something seemed "familiar" about it all--and, several years later, I recognized why it all seemed familiar. The popular defense lawyer as puppetmaster? The town of _ahem_ Chicago as backdrop? Hmm... Watch "Primal Fear" then watch "Chicago" (2003 release). Deja vu.
Well thought out storyline. The court scenes are intense and keep you guessing. Ed Norton is incredible in this movie. He really has you thinking....until the ending. The ending will knock you off your feet! Great drama and emotion through the whole movie.
This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. Edward Norton gives an amasing proformance in this fast paced thriller. Richard Gere is also great! This film will have you on the edge of your seat and the ending will knock you out of your chair! Do your self a favor and watch this film
