The problem it runs into is milennial movie goers. If they had occasionally looked up from their cell phones they would've seen this movie. In the '70's a movie called "The Sting" was released, about two con men in the 1930's, a huge classic that everyone noticed. Now we have an equally good movie here in 2013 about two such characters in the '70's. It is easily in the same league as "The Sting", but it's handicap at being recognized as a classic is an audiennce too otherwise hypnotized/addicted by technology to notice a truly amazing story. They are too addled by their overloaded dopamine receptors from all that texting. Come twenty years or so this may be a real problem when the reins begin to be turned over to a whole bunch of tech-drunks.
Without the women, this thing was fairly weak. It not only was about the 70's, it has that very weak style of filmmaking.
Fleshy and flashy. Not comedic enough.
Needed a better director.

Fabulous movie, great characters, acting, great shots & soundtrack. Irv's character is really something, fat, confident, excellent taste+ his whole hair thing. Irv's problem is he doesnt want to loose anything so he ends up doing the worst thing & it really kills me (& him) that he does it. But he still does it. It breaks your heart for the Jeremy character who is so likeable. Irv and Sydney are great cons, Syd, just got a bit too greedy...so the trouble begins. Richie, played by Bradley, is a greedy narsissistic FBI guy agent who laughs his way into fumble, which is sweet. Rosalyn, a manipulative wife, is a great character filled with passionate emotions that affect everything. I loved this film and have seen it at least 6 times and will see more.

I forget how it ends
Its a well made movie with some great actors and performances. It just doesn't spark completely though. The ending was good and it's worth watching but only as your 2nd choice movie. the overall rating of 3.5 stars is very fair.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Great cast, acting, writing, directing, etc. Great flick. Rotten Tomatoes got this one right.

When this was in theatres, I was not the least bit interested. Especially due to the false and flashy emphasis on today's big shots. Then I tuned in to see what all the fuss was about. Ultimately, AMERICAN HUSTLE really wasn't worth much fuss at all. Whatever David O. Russell was getting at working with the same people again--Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert DeNiro (in an uncredited role)--he failed miserably. Reality check, Mr. Russell: Don't work with the same people--or with people, period--unless they have what the story requires to come to convincing, and convicting, life. Besides, star power is NOT going to cut it. [An improvement over Nolan's "Dark Knight" series for Christian Bale. But not good enough.] Second, this is supposed to be a period piece. Yet, the time is unknown. I'm sure I heard it was set in the seventies (1970s) when I saw it; but it looks like the fifties (1950s). What kind of time-twister is this? Besides, it is not enough to look or sound like the period; it has to FEEL like the period in question. Locations, characters, designs, and more. How can this be a nominee, many ask? Well, call it a hustle by 2K10 Hollywood, and the mainstream film industry as a whole. Trailers, TV spots, and others feed us a bunch of lies. All in all, I can't and won't say I'm proud of this film--no matter who's in it. Nor do I recommend it to anyone. Any and all in Movieland who do, take this little hustle someplace else.
I had really high expectations for this movie, especially after "Silver Linings Playbook". However, this movie had some really good scenes, but the final product overall really wasn't very cohesive. I will save you 2.5 hours and tell you you can skip this movie.
There is definitely a great story in this movie but it takes time to develop. If you can’t watch a movie with gunfights and explosions every 15 min then this isn’t for you. With the exception of Lawrence this was a very well acted movie but with that being said, Lawrence is just is so bad it achieves the characters desired goal of bing the comedy relief. This is also the kind of movie that gets better with the second watch. Once you know what the payoff is in this movie it removes the unknown factor and you can just sit back and enjoy the story
What a glorious jaw-dropping movie experience. Definitely one of my favorite movies.
I couldn't get into it at all. Slow and vulgar. Sorry I bought it. Thought it would be better based on all the nominations it received.
I really like this movie. Story line, acting, everything is great about this movie.
Incredible performances could not cover up an average film. At times boring and not even close to funny, the film is one of the most overrated of 2013. Worth the watch for the acting alone but if your looking for a compelling and well written story, look somewhere else.
There was no plot in this movie. No Plot Whatsoever. What was every character trying to do in the movie, I don't know. It's just a movie that really failed in my opinion because their was no plot or storyline. Just a movie that has no plot and ultimally failed in the end.
Avoid avoid avoid.... Waste of life
i bought the movie and several people in my family watched it and by about halfway through the movie i was just about fall asleep. same with everyone else. NOT WORTH IT spend you time better watch a different movie.
A story about a con artist thats all this is. The movie is slow paced, I like the story though.

If I could, I wouldn't give this any stars. Jennifer Lawrence did the crappiest accent ever. She was terrible at it. Now don't get me wrong, I love Jennifer Lawrence. She's incredible and such a great actor. But just not in this movie. Don't waste your time and money on this movie.
I only watched it for J.Law. The movie was so boring I was sitting there waiting for it to get better until it was over and I was just like oh...but Jennifer's scenes were actually the best parts of the movie.
How on earth was this nominated for anything? I guess it goes to show that people are sheep and will believe anything the media tells them to believe. Terrible and boring movie.
But… the film felt like it was either trying too hard to fit into Mr. Scorsese's neighborhood, or it accidentally found itself there and went overboard with respect-showing...
I couldn't finish this - had to turn it off after an hour on a 2 hour flight. The movie moves along so slow and these great actors couldn't save it. Bale overacts and bombs.
I loved the movie. Granted with two kids I don't view much cinema anymore so my bar may have dropped but what's not to love. The soundtrack, wardrobe and cars are worth the 2+ hours along.
To answer someone else, no you are not the only one that didn't like it.
I have to agree with many of the reviews and I'm not surprised there are so many negative ones. This movie was very boring. First movie we shut off before it was over in a long time. I can't believe it won so many awards. Disappointing.
Saw this right after the Oscars and have to say it deserved every nomination it got. Bale is the glue that keeps it all together, amazing in his venerability and damaged bravado. But Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence are also spot on with performances that sting with the depth of pain in the characters. The twist at the end is smart and refreshing in its understated tone. Ringing clear, this movie David O. Russell's high note.
Hate is the nicest thing I could say. The plot was hard to follow for one reason. It was impossible for me to want to pay attention. It was boring, poorly performed, a bad story, and a good cast. I would rather eat nail clippings than finish this movie.
An intense, dramatic movie with a well-chosen ensemble cast. Dark, but liberally laced with wit and humor à la Fargo and Argo. You may want to watch it twice before the rental period expires.
...It doesn't. This movie is an improvised jumble, obscuring the actually interesting and important true story of the ABSCAM scandal, with overly colored but skin deep character portraits or, worse, caricatures. This reviewer felt like even the actors probably didn't know much about the underlying true story upon which this film is very loosely (un)hinged. I like Lawrence, but her portrayal feels more like a tinny mockery of the underlying character she was aiming for. She was so good and genuine in Winter's Bone, I wish she'd make something of such quality again, but that means having good material, and forsaking the big budget tinsel that is almost everything she's done since. Yes, I know, tinsel is shiny and fun. But Winter's Bone is art and lasting.
This was an extraordinarily well-done movie. I was taken back to the 1970's and loved every minute. The cast is outstanding and could not have been better. Freaking awesome.
This movie is just great. Watch it (I almost didn’t, because of all the crummy reviews). Ignore the reviewers, apparently they had an agenda. Like I said, this movie is just great. Really really good sound track. And while I’m at it, watch Three Kings — another David O. Russell gem.
No, you're not the only one who hated the movie. Lots of ‘eye candy' for sure from some popular stars who came across as pretending, not acting. The absurdity of certain scenes and events forces one to also pretend along with the actors.....you know, pretend that you believe this could actually happen. What's the point?
Great script and even better acting. Glad I bought it
In terms of movie making, I can see why people like this movie. Great acting, great costume/set design, good plot. But as the movie progressed, I got confused and bored a couple of times. The movie opens in one place, shifts backward in time, and then eventually catches up to the opening scene. I felt like it took way too long to get back to the ‘opening scene’ scene. One of the good things about this movie was its humor. Christian Bale’s hair troubles were hilarious, along with his scenes with Jennifer Lawrence. Bradley Cooper’s scenes were also comical at times. However, I did not like Amy Adam’s English accent. I don’t know if it was supposed to be bad or not, but it really was. Or maybe I’m crazy. But it got on my nerves and distracted me from the movie. And if this movie would have been just a little bit shorter, I think I would have liked it more. Overall though, it’s worth a watch. But definitely rent it before buying.
It just wasn't that good or interesting. Waste of time watching.
I don’t understand what all the hype is about. This is pretty standard hollywood stuff. Decently made and acting was alright, had some funny moments but overall unoriginal and never really draws you in.
One of my favorites ever. I think the people who didn't like it didn't understand it, or just have really bad taste in movies.
Ignore the naysayers,IMO this movie was great and full of solid performances. :)
I know dis stuff

Even though all reviews are bad on here don't think you're different. Okay movie with slow but intense plot. Great cast but only two big standouts. Bale and Renner
This was a really really bad movie….. I literally forwarded through the entire thing just to make it to the end. It was boring and a waste of money!

The lead trio is the weakest element, though with some exceptionally redeeming efforts by Bale…
All the supporting roles, led foremost by Lawrence, run the enviable gamut from exceptionally fine to breathtaking. The direction might reasonably be criticized on personal-taste grounds, but there is no denying the deftness and clarity that guides the entirety and paints with a nuanced hand reminiscent of Kubrick. This banquet for the mind and heart, further, dazzles with a glistening cinematography which alone would be worth the price of admission.
I love action pictures and revel in the panacea of escapist epics, but sometimes you need to feed your soul.
I see all the poor reviews and people, like my sister, who said it wasn't believable. Neither was Friends (minimum wage 20 something's living in NYC) but ppl loved that. My point is that the film was filled with layers and metaphors. All in all it was a part bio and part societal satire! Get a clue people! This is much of the same rhetoric Pulp Fiction received however, now, it's considered a classic already!
I personally wouldn't suggest seeing this movie. It's very boring and the plot switches around constantly which can get confusing at times
Great actor. Never misses a beat.
Not sure why it has so many good ratings. Total bait and switch. Had to force myself to finish it because I paid to rent it...otherwise I would have turned it off within 10 minutes. HORRIBLE
UH hmm..grr…what?? Oh yeah, I was watching this movie…(20 mins. later) guuurrrrrrr..eh.co…coo, what? oh yeah..same movie..THIS MOVIE IS BORING!!!
